A Slightly Skewed Journey of Type 2 Diabetes with Joe

Hi, my name is Joe. I was diagnosed in 1999 with a fasting blood sugar of 170. This was before A1c tests. I started an oral medication regimen which of course didn’t work and blood Glucose meters were clunky big devices, etc. It wasn’t until the introduction of Byetta and using Humalog 75/25 in the early 2000s that my blood sugars and A1c started coming down into normal range.

Fast forward to 2007 and living in Florida. Byetta, Metformin, and Humalog 75/25 were my regimens and my A1c was in the low 6’s. I started having severe hypoglycemia events despite adjusting my dosage of Humalog. The events were so bad that I asked my Endocrinologist to please put me on a CGM. That’s how I started using Dexcom on the G4. My hypo events all but ended. Plus, I was able to get my A1c below 6 to 5.8. While testing my blood sugars, I would wipe my fingers on paper towels, which was messy.

Everything was status quo until I started having severe lows again and switched to plain Humalog, Lantus (and later Basaglar) along with Bydureon. So, I asked my current Endo to please put me on a pump. I was able to go on the Omnipod and later the Omnipod Dash. This is a much better glucose control system for me with virtually no low blood sugars thanks to the current generation of the Dexcom. I was happy when Dabs came along. The product was perfectly sized to conveniently wipe the blood from my fingers after testing my glucose. They are absorbent and easy to use, plus I could just dispose them in a sharps container. So now for my regimen, I used the Omnipod, Dexcom G6, and Metformin. Along with Dabs when I test.

My husband was recently diagnosed as Type 2 and he does fingersticks twice a day so I introduced him to the Dabs. He thinks they are great also. So, that’s my story! With the Dexcom, I know my time in range is in the 90 percentile range and my A1c’s run the 5 range.

Playing Sports With Diabetes

IT’S PLAYOFF TIME!

This is an exciting time of the year in my household. Playoff season always draws high energy, especially when two of your home teams ( Bruins & Celtics) are still in the running. Being a professional athlete takes a tremendous amount of dedication, focus, and tenacity to compete at that level. Do you ever stop and think for a moment about the professional athletes that live with diabetes? I often do, because I live in a house with my 4 boys and my husband, and sports are a permanent fixture on the TV. Furthermore, my son David is heavily involved in sports lives with type 1. These athletes take on a whole other “to-do” list (both mentally and physically). Playing sports with diabetes has its own set of challenges.

Testimonials

What our clients say about us

This has made a huge difference in the cleanliness of my son’s diabetic bag! Great idea we love it!

LM—Diabetic Dabs User

The dabs are small and easy to stash in your purse, testing kit, or like I did: right on the back of your OmniPod meter (using the adhesive back).
The sheets work exactly as described- they’re absorbent and easy to use. You just tear off a sheet and wipe your finger.
It’s like a teeny, tiny paper towel made for finger-sticks. And it sure beats sucking your finger in the middle of a business dinner,
or wiping blood on your pants for that matter. Love it when I find something so simple but so helpful.

A. Diabetes Blogger

I love it when a member of our community is able to create something to fill a need we have.

JC. Diabetes Blogger

Love these! Been using them since they first came out for my two T1D’s. Very handy to have them posted to the inside
of their Omnipod PDM pouch with the adhesive that comes on the back. We put a fun sticker on the front cover to jazz them up a bit.
So much better than licking their fingers. I would highly recommend 🙂

Kathy P.

We found out about D-dabs while attending Camp Conrad and we love them!
We used to shove tissues in her meter bag so she wouldn’t wipe blood everywhere.

Kristen W.

I have been using these for years. So convenient to carry, fits right into the glucometer case, so now I always have something clean to press onto the lanced area.
Great to hear that the box has improved along with making it easier to open the pads.

Richie F.

I use them all the time!!!!!
Love my dabs!!!!!!

Carmen B

What a brilliant invention! Hope to see it become a permanent component of the testing kit.
Thanks for simplifying my routine.

Joe—Dabs User

This product is so easy to use and makes it one easier step with dealing with diabetes.
I recommend this product to every diabetic, you too will like it.

Maria C—Dabs User

As i move through my busy work day (with my testing kit in hand) i struggle with one item not included with my kit. I have the meter, the needles, the test strip, but no way to deal with the blood. Thank you for addressing this for me, i feel more prepared to deal with my day!

At school, teaching young diabetic children to use good testing technique has always been a challenge. Diabetic dabs simplifies the process and helps keep the environment clean and safe for everyone. Your product is an indispensable addition to any testing kit!

Marie p.—Elementary school nurse

The little sheets are insanely absorbent, so you barely even have to touch your finger to the sheet to get the blood off. And they don’t feel like another accessory that’s hanging around and getting in my way, because (unlike a lot of other d-things), they actually solve a problem.

Joanne cunha—blogger – death of a pancreas

After just a day, i was missing that little square piece of paper being in there because i had transitioned from being a “licker” to a “wiper”. And actually, the thought of licking anymore had become gross to me, where it never really was before.

Other Uses for Dabs®

Other Uses for Dabs®

Dabs can help to wipe up and clean a number of small messes. If you use Dabs as a replacement for cotton balls, you’ll be surprised at all the additional ways you can use this product. You can dab almost anything. Here’s a look at just some of the ways dabs conveniently fit into your lifestyle.

Cleaning Kit
Dabs should become an essential part of your cleaning kit. They are perfect for reaching into those little nooks and crannies — for instance, if you are trying to clean jewelry, remote controls, light switches, keyboards, your cell phone, or the corners of your bathtub. They can also help to polish silver or to clean chrome sinks. If you need to apply a little vinegar to dissolve mineral deposits, milk to remove permanent marker, or any other cleaners or solvents, you can simply dip a Dabs wipe into the liquid and watch the magic happen.

First Aid Uses
Originally invented to help wipe up blood after a glucose test, Dabs should be a standard part of your home and travel first aid kit. For small injuries such as cutting yourself shaving, Dabs are the perfect way to catch those drops of blood quickly and cleanly. These wipes are also ideal if you need to clean up after a blood draw, and some people like to dip Dabs into vinegar and baking soda and then rub the mixture on their sunburns for a bit of relief.
Each Dabs pad features 50 wipes and an adhesive back. You can stick the pad to the outside or inside of your first aid kit to ensure that your Dabs are readily available when you need them. Alternatively, hang them in the kitchen by the knives, in the bathroom by your mirror, and in any other spots where you find yourself wishing you had an ultra-absorbent wipe for small-scale messes.

Diffuser
Because Dabs are extra absorbent, they can soak up a range of nice odors and work as a deodorizer. For instance, you can dip a Dabs wipe in vanilla extract and place it in the fridge to keep away odors. Some people like to pop a wipe in their favorite essential oil and then put it in a vacuum bag to release nice scents as they vacuum the floor.

Office
When you’re working, small messes tend to pop up all the time. If you spill a few drops of coffee, you don’t need to run to the bathroom for another low quality paper towel — you just need to grab Dabs and let its absorbent powers spring into action. Leaky pen all over your fingers? Dabs can also help. You just place the pad of Dabs wipes at your desk and grab a Dabs every time you need one. Offering timely, powerful absorbance and cleaning uses, Dabs are an office essential.

At Dabs, we have the solution you need for small messes. To buy Dabs, find a store or order online now. To learn more, contact us or explore the rest of our site for more information and inspiration.

Other Medical Uses

Medical Uses for Dabs®

Dabs were invented by a proud Type 1 mom with the intention of making blood testing cleaner and easier for her son. It became apparent that these medical wipes didn’t have to be exclusive to diabetes care. These innovative, non-toxic, extremely absorbent wipes can be used for a long list of medical cleaning purposes.

Allergy Testing
Seeing an allergy specialist is a thing of the past. At home allergy tests are widely popular and most at-home tests pick up the 10 most common allergens. The kit requires you to prick your skin to harvest a bit of blood. You can use Dabs to wipe up any remaining drops of blood when you’re done testing.

Cholesterol Checks
Just like glucose testing, Cholesterol tests have you prick your finger to get drops of blood for the vial. Once you’ve completed those steps, you need something that can hygienically clean up the excess blood on your skin, and Dabs offer the perfect solution

Thyroid Checks
When you’re having thyroid issues and you want to check on its health, you can using an at-home thyroid test. Again, you just need to prick your finger, put the blood sample on the collection card, mail in the test, and wait for the results. To minimize germs and to facilitate clean up while you take the test, Dabs can help.

Home Blood Draws
Besides the tests mentioned above, there are a range of other medical needs that require home blood draws. In fact, there are even phlebotomists who deliver their services, providing blood draws for people who are homebound. However, you don’t necessarily need a professional to do your blood draws. Many people take blood draws on a regular basis for a range of different tests. Regardless of why you’re drawing blood, you need to be able to clean it up and Dabs are the perfect solution. You don’t even need to wipe or press. Once you set the Dabs wipe on your skin, it effortlessly absorbs any lingering drops of blood, and you don’t have to worry about picking up germs from your clothing or your mouth.

IV Treatment at Home
In some cases, you may even need intravenous treatment (IV) when you are at home. People turn to central venous catheters, central venous catheter ports, peripherally inserted central catheters, and normal IVs to finish rounds of antibiotics, to address hormone deficiencies, to administer pain medications, for chemo treatments, or for other medical needs. Whether you have a home health aide or you administer your own IV, a few drops of blood may appear when you put in the needle, and Dabs provides a non-toxic, fast, and easy way to clean up the area.

You deserve tools that simplify your medical needs. If you’re immunocompromised, you also need the ability to quickly wipe away blood and germs without worrying about contamination. Dabs can help. These extra absorbent wipes are the perfect size for a few drops of blood. Never worry about wasting a paper towel or trying to find an itchy napkin again — simply hang a pad of Dabs where you take care of your medical needs, and you’ll always have soft easy-to-use cleaning supplies at your fingertips.

Manicures-Pedicures

Dabs® for Manicures and Pedicures

Beautiful nails make you look and feel great, and Dabs can help you improve your manicure and pedicure routine. With our patented absorbing technology and conveniently sized wipes, nail polish removal and edging can get a whole lot easier. Here’s a look at why you should ditch other alternatives like latex stickers or liquid tape.

Ideal for Quick Fixes
Often when doing your nails, you need to come up with fixes on the fly, especially when unwanted nail polish drips onto your skin. Dabs are small and flexible enough for you to clean just that particular spot without getting nail polish remover on the nail itself.

Small and Portable
Using cotton balls for your nail polish process takes up lots of space. A large bag can take up half of a sizeable makeup kit, and if you only put a couple of cotton balls in your bag they’ll get dirty, plus you’ll quickly run out. A pack of 50 2×2 in. Dabs wipes up only a minimal amount of space. Due to their hyper-absorbant complexion, these little wipes pack a big punch.

Dabs feature an adhesive backing so you can easily stick the pack of wipes to the inside or the outside of your nail polish kit, in your bathroom, or wherever you want easy access when you need them.

Patented Absorbent Technology
Each Dab is designed to be extra absorbent. As a result, the wipes soak up a lot of nail polish remover, reducing the number of pads or cotton balls needed to remove your nail polish. If you wash your hands or feet before you apply the polish, you can use a couple of Dabs wipes to ensure that all areas of your skin and nails are completely dry prior to the application process. This makes for a much sleeker look.

Convenient Shape
The square shape of Dabs wipes also makes nail polish removal easier. You can soak a wipe in some nail polish remover, then just place the wipe on top of your nail. You don’t even have to scrub! Some people even like to hold it in place with a bit of tin foil, but that’s optional.

Helpful Through the Whole Process
To ensure your nail polish truly sticks to your nails, you need to start with a clean surface. Grab a Dabs wipe, add a few drops of nail polish remover, and clean off lingering polish, dirt, or oils before applying your nail polish. If you file your nails before putting on nail polish, you can also use Dabs to wipe away bits of nail dust. These wipes are designed so that they don’t leave any dust or fibers behind.

The next time you do a pedicure or a manicure, arm yourself with Dabs. Enjoy the ease of these ultra-absorbent wipes and see how they improve your routine. To learn more, contact us, find stores that sell Dabs, or order Dabs online now.

Eyeglass Wipes

For Eyeglasses

It’s simple, convenient and easy. Just throw them outwhen you’re done- they’re non-toxic! If you have glasses, you know how annoying it is to keep them clean. Your glasses are meant to enhance your vision. Not to put smudges and smears between you and the world. To keep your glasses as clean as possible, make Dabs your go to cleaning wipe. To learn more, contact us today, check out the stores that sell Dabs, or explore our site for more ideas on the many ways we can streamline your busy life. Here’s a look at just a few of the reasons people love cleaning their glasses with Dabs.

Eliminates Smudgy Lenses
Smudges often occur when oil or debris builds up on the lens — particularly around your nose or in places where you’ve touched your glasses. Not to mention, the nosepiece itself can get pretty dirty. To remove smudges and grime buildup, you need a quality lens cleaning wipe that can cut through the grease. Dabs are patented for their highly absorbent quality, making them useful in removing these inevitable smudges. Spray a small amount of lens cleaner on a Dab and just wipe your lenses.

In other cases, smudges happen because water doesn’t get wiped away properly when you’re cleaning your glasses. To avoid water-based smudges, you need a very absorbent cloth that can effortlessly absorb all the liquid on your lenses. Dabs can be the perfect solution.

No Maintenance
Unlike the cloth you get from the eye doctor, Dabs don’t require any maintenance. Those microfiber cloths have to be washed on a regular basis to remove built up dust and debris. In most cases, once you start washing your microfiber cloths, they lose their softness. In contrast, with Dabs, you just tear a new wipe from the pad and start wiping. Because each one is brand new, you get that softness and absorbency you need every time.

Reduce the Environmental Risks Associated with Microfiber
Although microfiber is incredibly versatile helpful in a range of ways, the synthetic material break down in washing machines, and unfortunately, those fibers make their way into waterways. To prevent the spread of synthetic materials in the environment, many people have just decided to put microfiber cloths aside. When you switch to Dabs, you don’t have to worry about this harmful pollution. Dabs are non-toxic wipes and create much less waste than even a tissue or paper towel. This offers you a guilt-free way to clean your glasses.

Tired of looking through smudged lenses? Can’t seem to stop streaks from appearing? Don’t like taking care of the microfiber cloth you got from the optometrist? Let Dabs help you clean your eyeglasses quicker and easier.

I love it when a member of our community is able to create something to fill a need we have.

For Diabetes

Diabetic uses for Dabs

Diabetes is challenging. You must pay attention to many details both large and small, and you need products that make those processes easier. Dabs is just a little wipe, but it’s highly absorbent, non-toxic, easy-to-use, and disposable — thanks to those features, you’ll love dabbing. Here’s a look at just a few of the benefits of using Dabs while you’re checking your glucose levels.

Supplements the Testing Kit
All diabetes testing kits come with a lancing device, alcohol prep pads, test strips, and a glucose reader, but none include a certain not-so-tiny detail. After you lance your finger, there’s no way to wipe up the blood. By adding a pad of Dabs to your testing kit, you arm yourself with a highly absorbent, conveniently small sterile wipe that’s perfectly discrete for cleaning up after you finish checking your glucose level. No more worrying, no more licking. Just Dabbing.

Easy-to-Use
Dabs are easy to use. There is no learning curve. You simply tear a sheet of Dabs off the pad. Then, you place it over the spot where blood has beaded up on your skin. Even if you don’t apply any pressure, the super absorbent wipe will simply soak up the blood, leaving your skin clean and dry. Best of all, the wipe doesn’t leave any residue, and since it’s non-toxic, you can simply throw it away when you’re done.

Ideal for Children & Elderly Individuals
Dabs are perfect for people of all ages, but are especially ideal for children and elderly individuals. If you have a child with diabetes or if you are a professional working with diabetic children, you’ll love how Dabs simplifies the testing process for them. With Dabs, children have what they need to clean up their blood, and you never have to worry about them licking it or wiping it on their clothing and other items. The same holds true for elderly individuals who may struggle to check their glucose levels themselves.

The Perfect Size
Individual paper towels, napkins, and even tissues are too large to be effective for wiping up a few drops of blood after a glucose test. With these options, you end up throwing away a lot of paper, and you can’t easily keep a bulky roll of paper towels in your testing kit. Each Dabs pad is perfectly sized to conveniently fit inside your testing kit. Then, when it’s time to test your blood, you don’t have to do anything else. You just take a sheet off the pad and watch as the wipe effortlessly absorbs the blood. You also don’t need to worry about reordering for quite a while. Each Dabs pad contains 50 sheets — if you test your glucose twice a day, a pad will last you nearly a month.

Features an Adhesive Back
Diabetes doesn’t have to slow you down. When you’re busy and on the go, the adhesive backing on each Dabs pad ensures that you can easily carry your Dabs anywhere. Just peel off the back and stick the pad to the inside or outside of your testing kit, or put it in your desk, in your car, or wherever you tend to do your blood tests. Then, when you need to dab, you always have a wipe instantly available at your fingertips.

Eliminates Risks Associated with Licking
A lot of people never have to think too hard about what to do with a few drops of blood, but for diabetics, that’s a concern you have to deal with at least a couple times per day. In the diabetic world, most people consider themselves “lickers” or “wipers”. While licking may be a quick way to remove blood, it is not a clean or safe option. The human mouth contains a range of bacteria that are harmless while in the mouth but that can cause infections when introduced into a wound. When you’re armed with Dabs, you don’t have to lick the blood and potentially cause an infection. Instead, you can quickly and easily wipe up any drops with your Dabs wipes.

Keeps Your Testing Kit Clean
Some people just wipe their blood onto their testing kit. While a smear or two may go unnoticed, the blood can build up over time. That can leave unwanted germs on your testing kit, make it feel sticky to the touch, and potentially even degrade the fabric. Dabs can help you avoid that.

Can Replace Alcohol Swabs
Before testing your glucose levels, you need to wipe the germs off your skin. Unfortunately, soap and hot water is not always available, and because of that, some people carry alcohol wipes in their bags. Unfortunately, alcohol wipes can dry out and become useless. Luckily, when you have Dabs, you don’t need alcohol wipes anymore. You can simply carry a small bottle of rubbing alcohol, pour a few drops on your Dabs wipe, and then, easily clean your skin before doing the blood draw.

Thoroughly Dries Your Hands
As you know, you can dilute the blood sample if you have excess water or rubbing alcohol on your skin — those elements can mix with your blood and skew the reading on your monitor. If you’re in a public bathroom at work or school, you may be stuck using an air drier that simply doesn’t get all the moisture off your hands. To get a truly accurate reading, you need to make sure your hands are dry, and Dabs can help. Whenever you don’t have a towel to dry your hands, just let Dabs handle the job.

Offers Versatility
As you carry Dabs around with you, you’re likely to notice a wide range of ways that you can use these absorbent wipes. You can use Dabs to remove nail polish, to take off makeup, to clean your glasses, and to perform a variety of other tasks. Many people start with Dabs as part of their diabetic testing kit, but then, they invariably start to embrace Dabs for other things on their to-do list as well. You may be surprised at all the ways you can use this product.

Dabs are the perfect addition to your glucose testing kit, and they improve the testing process in a number of ways. If you’re ready to make your tests faster, easier, and clean, try Dabs today. Find stores that sell Dabs, order online, or contact us with questions.

At school, teaching young diabetic children to use good testing technique has always been a challenge. Diabetic Dabs simplifies the process and helps keep the environment clean and safe for everyone. Your product is an indispensable addition to any testing kit!

About

The Dabs® story

I am Liz Sacco, the founder of Dabs and a mother of four lovable and energetic boys. In March of 2011 my oldest son David was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Prior to David’s diagnosis, I didn’t have anyone close to me living with this disease. As a family, we were faced with a lot of uncertainties. In the process of adjusting our new lifestyle, and David’s remarkable resolve to living with diabetes, I soon realized there was a constant struggle in finding a clean and easy way for him to remove the excess blood from his finger after blood glucose testing. As anyone with diabetes can tell you, testing your blood sugar levels is a regular part of every day, and shouldn’t have to pose more problems than you are already dealing with.

I attempted to find an efficient solution to help simplify his testing routine. I tried placing travel size Kleenex in his case, which was much too cumbersome. I put a single tissue in his case, which wastefully he would throw out after just one use. I felt not only were we trying to balance his new lifestyle, but we had an added aggravation with where to wipe his finger after the blood glucose testing.

After two years of diligently searching for a solution to this simple problem, I decided to develop Diabetic Dabs®. I started my company with the hopes of making a positive impact in the lives of those living with diabetes. As a member of the diabetes community, I am passionate about helping to simplify and improve the lives of families like ours.

EXPERIENCE IS THE BEST TEACHER

I’ve learned many lessons along the path to helping my son live his best life with diabetes and would love to share my experiences with your group or organization. Please reach out if you are searching for a speaker for your next event.
